2 Years in a row!

2 Years in a row!

Cross Country off to Nationals!

This is only the second year The Eagle's have competed in the ACAC Cross Country and the second year we are sending off a representative to CCAA Nationals.

We have spoken with both Head Coach Ralph Troschke and national qualifier to get their inside thoughts on the year.

Ralph:

How has the season been leading up to this point?

From a programmatic perspective, I am delighted that (a) we have representation at Nationals for a second year (both years of our existence); (b) I am delighted that all athletes continued to improve throughout the season and all participants in the provincial finals ran personal bests (also a 2 for 2); (c) I am delighted that Josh placed 9th in the province and know he will represent us well on the national stage; (d) I am hopeful for next year as unlike last year all of my athletes will return and specifically Andrea Leusink (1st year student) ran very well and should be competing for a nationals spot next year.

What does it mean to the team and the program to be attending nationals for the second year a row?

This is fantastic news. We have the smallest team in numbers and are one of the smallest schools in the ACAC. We punch above our weight. It is difficult to compete on the team level with the larger schools like SAIT but on an individual basis some of our athletes hold their own with the best in the province. It demonstrates that we can produce excellence and that this can be a destination for serious XCountry runners.

Josh:

What is your Cross Country/running background?

Running has been one of my favourite forms of sport for sometime now, but something I hadn't taken seriously until the last couple of years. I grew up running track and cross country in BC but always viewed running as a way to train for my other sports. Since becoming focused on running though I have found some succes and have been able to achieve some personal goals such as qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2024 and registering for my first ultra marathon next summer. As a sport running has definitely provided me with an outlet to explore what I am truly capable of accomplishing and is something I plan to contintue pursuing for years to come.

How was your first experience competing in the ACAC?

Competing in the ACAC has been a great experience. The atmosphere and sportsmanship of the compitions have been top notch. Not to mention racing itself is a test of ability like no other, one that will push you to your absolute limits, especially in a field that contains such high calibre athletes. These kind of conditions make it an exciting experience where you are able to acheive your personal best.

What are your expectations going to Nationals?

My main goal with nationals is to enjoy the experience. I've never visited the maritimes of Canada so that alone is something I am really looking forward to. In terms of the race itself I would like to set another personal best with a sub 28:00 time and hopefully finish within the top 30 runners.

We wish you the best of luck at nationals Josh and Ralph!

Go Eagles!
