Men's Futsal Leads the Northwest 4-0 Headed Into ACAC Championships

Men's Futsal Leads the Northwest 4-0 Headed Into ACAC Championships

The King's University Eagles have found early success in Futsal. Led by head coach Todd Van Driel, Men's Futsal has made it to the ACAC Championships. They finished the Northwest Futsal Regional Playoff 4-0 and are now preparing for their competition ahead. Top in their division, the team now looks for Championship status in March.

Todd Van Driel, Head Coach

Todd Van Driel owns a feeling of excitement and he says his team is ready to face whoever is next. He stated "They worked so hard leading up to every tournament. There was a sense of pent-up energy because of Covid and they're ready for competition." Todd went on to describe their tactics and how they will handle the pressure. "The results are reflecting our work," he continued, "We've always put process over performance and made sure there was a way to bring the two together. Our focus for the upcoming tournament is to adapt to the pressure." Men's Futsal faced NAIT and GPRC in both tournaments and found themselves conforming to their style of play in the first tournament instead of working on what they had developed. Todd made it clear that the most important aspect of their team is their identity. So, in preparation for the second tournament, the team found their groove and stuck with it throughout their games. "Can we work on the process of who we want to be?" Todd added, "Our focus is to trust who we are, to adapt, to be fluid, and to replicate the pressure we will be facing."

Mason Hill, Forward

Mason Hill, a third-year forward, had a few things to note about the team. "We've been training hard and teaching some of the younger guys how to play Futsal. After our two regionals, we are very excited to head to provincials and face the competition there." Hill continued about the team's excitement, "The older guys are itching to take on some of the province's finest, while the younger guys are excited to make their mark."

ACAC Championships

The King's University Eagles have had success in all sports this year. The Men's Futsal team is playing in the ACAC Championship Tournament in March against quality opponents from across Alberta. The coaches, the players, and the King's community are thrilled to see the team succeed and look forward to celebrating their accomplishments.
