Evan Veldman and Sammi Lieuwen are no strangers around The King's University campus, but within the past two weeks these athletes have been recognized at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference level. Both Evan and Sammi are outside hitters from British Columbia. Sammi attended Surrey Christian and came to our program in fall of 2019. Evan is a fourth year athlete from Terrace B.C. and attended Centennial Christian.
November 8 - 14, 2021 ACAC Athlete of the Week: Sammi Lieuwen, Women's Volleyball
Eagles second year left side, Sam Lieuwen, had an outstanding weekend in exhibition play against the Concordia 'Thunder' earning a total of 17 points for her team with 14 kills, 1 stuff block and 2 serving aces. Sam's overall kill efficiency was 32% making her an excellent recipient for Player of the Game. "Sammi is one of our most consistent players whose passion for the game and leadership are a tremendous asset to our team." said head coach, Grace Scott. Sammi is also passionate about the outdoors and is currently studying in the Environmental Sciences program at King's. She is a very hard worker whose positive attitude makes her a great team player as well.
November 15 - 21, 2021 ACAC Athlete of the Week: Evan Veldman, Men's Volleyball
"Evan Veldman had a dominant weekend to kick start the beginning of our league play. Evan led our team to sweep the Keyano Huskies 2-0 in Fort McMurray's home gym this past weekend. Friday, Ev defensively led our team with 11 digs and controlled the service line with 6 aces in 4 sets, winning that match 3-1. On Saturday, Evan was dominant in his offence with 15 kills and a wildly impressive 0.560 hitting percentage which earned him P.O.G. after closing out a 3-2 win versus the Huskies. Evan is currently third in the ACAC for hitting efficiency and 2nd in the ACAC for digs per set (one dig away from first place). Evan is an integral part of this team both on and off the court and I am proud of his TKU and ACAC Athlete of the Week recognitions" (Coach Winand).
Both the Women's and Men's Volleyball teams have an exciting season ahead of them and with talent from Lieuwen and Veldman, both teams look promising!
